Meeting Minutes 02/12/08

 

Attendance: 17 Members Mel Lulow, Bill Balke, Kermit Krueger, John Grothe, Dan Tongen, John Wilde, George Helpap, Earl Bergin, Harlan Harris, Ken Deicher, DuWayne Wieck, Jim Stahlman, Ed Schroeder, Bill Kamin, Mark Degner, Dave Niedfeldt, and Konrad Kaczkowski

 

Meeting opened at 1900 Hrs with prayer led by Jim Stahlman, Commander Degner along with 1st Vice Dave Niedfeldt conducted the POW/MIA empty chair ceremony, and Commander Degner led the pledge to the Flag and the reading of the American Legion Preamble.

 

Membership: No new members

 

Oratorical Contest: Ed Schroeder reported Naomi Wells was the winner of the County competition and will receive a $100 Savings Bond and the other 2 participants will receive $50 Savings Bonds from the County Dept. In District 2 competition Naomi finished 3rd, with the top 2 going on to State competition. At the State competition the District 2 rep finished 3rd and receive a $1,000 scholarship.

 

Badger Boys State: Dan Tongen reported he will be checking with the high school regarding candidates for Badger Boys State.

 

House Committee: No Report

 

Service Officer: John Grothe reported Gordy Dreifuerst and Joe Benauer  on sick call

 

Commander Degner reported that he was informed there have been 3 bids submitted for the Post’s electrical work. However he does not have the bids in hand and there will not be a vote taken to award the contract. As previously agreed Commander Degner will call upon the Executive committee to review the bids and vote on the contract.

 

Commander Degner made note that Jim Faller was not present, so there would be no discussion about the Post’s website per last meeting’s vote.

 

John Grothe reported that the Post needs another refrigerator downstairs, for Auxiliary desserts. Since one that was there was thrown out.

 

The Sheboygan County Veterans Commission is need of volunteer drivers to take Veterans to VA medical services. The County has a car to use for this purpose. For further information call Jim Riesenberg at 459-3053

 

Rebuilding Together program will be held March 19th 7:00 PM at the VFW Post 1230 1138 Union Ave Sheboygan. Local Rep Lester Bischoff will be there to answer questions.

 

Take advantage of Health Care Services through the Veterans Health Administration, US Dept of Veterans Affair. Seminar will be held March 15th VFW Post 5612 on North Stafford Street Plymouth at 10:00 AM Questions call 459-3054.

 

Annual Veterans Award Nominations. Please consider someone for one of the following State awards. Veterans Advocate of the Year, “Mission: Welcome Home” Supporter of the year, Veterans’ Legislative Staff of the year. “Iron Mike” Government officials’ service to veterans, County Veterans Service Officer of the year (CVSO), Veterans Service Officer of the year (Non-CVSO), Veterans’ Volunteer of the year. Adjutant Kaczkowski has the nomination papers call 892-2651 for a copy.

 

2000 Hrs meeting closed with prayer led by Jim Stahlman, in memory of 2 Wisconsin Marines Killed In Action in the Global War On Terrorism   in the month of February

 

Important Notice: A Doctor from the VA Zablocki Medical Center will be at our March 11th meeting. He will have info on a study that is specific to our Post. He will discuss chronic illness and will be looking for participants from our Post for a study.

Sounds interesting and may be worth while to attend.
